The U.S. government has placed an order on testing of the nation’s milk supply for bird flu to better monitor the spread of the virus in dairy cows.
All Raw or unpasteurized milk from dairy farms nationwide must be tested on request starting Dec. 16, the Agriculture Department said. Testing will be done in six states — California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon and Pennsylvania. So here in California we will be keeping an eye on the process and how it effects our companies we get Raw Milk from like Raw Farm and Desi Milk.
Officials said the move is aimed at “containing and ultimately eliminating the virus,” known as Type A H5N1, which was was found around March in U.S. dairy cows. More than 700 herds have been confirmed to be infected in 15 states, California included, but none of the brands we carry have been affected.
The risk to people from bird flu remains low, health officials said. And our brands we carry have been keeping a close eye on every batch they make. Here is word from Raw Farms:
The Santa Clara Public Health Department collected a sample of Raw Farm milk from a local retail
store. They then used their lab to perform an assay screening test and detected H5b.
• There are no human illnesses reported.
• The FDA has not reported any illnesses associated with consumption of HPAI containing
